With first-year 8-cylinder performance and custom LeBaron coachwork, this 1931 Chrysler CG Imperial is one of the few that Chrysler deemed worthy of its prestigious Imperial designation. Previously part of the O'Quinn Collection and one of the motor cars on the exclusive Classic Car Club of America Full Classic list, the Imperial stands at what many consider the apex of Imperial production with its Duesenberg-influenced style. The Imperial was first delivered new to Oakland, California, on April 10, 1931, and has since been returned to its original coachbuilt condition with a comprehensive restoration performed in 2006.
The motor car Chrysler touted as the New Imperial Eight was equipped with the largest of the new-for-1931 inline 8-cylinder engines mated to an Imperial-only 4-speed synchromesh manual transmission. With nine main bearings, full-pressure oil lubrication and light alloy pistons, the 384 CI L-head engine was rated for 125 HP at a relaxed 3,200 RPM and could propel the Imperial to near 100 MPH speeds. The 145-inch-wheelbase chassis is outfitted with a front I-beam and live rear axle affixed to a rubber isolated leaf-spring suspension that works in conjunction with 4-wheel hydraulic drum brakes for Imperial road control.
The coachbuilt LeBaron body is finished in a subtle two-tone tan paint scheme with a darker value defining the beltline and fenders. Red striping accents the sleek coupe design. Topped with a sculpted Gazelle, the V-type radiator is equipped with a stone guard for protection at maximum velocity. Wood-trimmed leather upholstery graces the well-appointed driver-centric interior, and the Imperial features a rumble seat for more adventurous passengers. Wire wheels with correct balloon-type tires deliver an authentic ride, and dual side mounts encased with Imperial-correct metal covers add touring capability with traditional style.
