The 1980s saw Chrysler’s focus radically change with increased innovation. The 1987 Chrysler Fifth Avenue represented the level of luxury the brand had always reserved for its premium releases, and this example shows only 31,376 miles since being delivered. It is estimated the Fifth Avenue upgrade option was added to approximately a mere 25% of all New Yorkers constructed on the M-Body platform used through the latter half of the decade, and the company even released a special brochure only on the Fifth Avenue’s appointments that year. It retains a stellar sense of this time period’s automotive heritage inside and out.
For power, the 5.2L OHV V-8 engine was offered, which had been part of Chrysler’s LA-series engine family for 20 years by this time. A TorqueFlite automatic transmission and highway-geared axle ratio was behind it. The model came with power front disc brakes as standard. The exterior on this example is done in maroon and features the unique landau-type vinyl roof. The interior is equipped with the factory-denoted “rich Corinthian leather” upholstery in red to match the outside. This interior includes the power-adjustable, button-tucked, pillow-top front seats.
Other interior appointments include the standard pushbutton air conditioning, power windows and a rear defogger, as well as the optional power locks, speed control, premium Quartz Lock AM/FM/cassette radio with a metallic facing, and burlwood-graphic auxiliary trim. Outside one sees the wide chrome rocker treatment between the wheel arch moldings, the centered clear Chrysler pentastar emblem, cubist grille design with waterfall grille, dual exterior mirrors and tinted glass. The trunk is carpeted and includes the covered spare. The final point of luxury are the multispoke wire wheel covers and a set of white-stripe radial tires. Included in this sale will be a set of original manuals.
The Fifth Avenue was created to make a statement about the wherewithal of its owner. This beauty from 1987 represents what style was like back in that era.
