Hurst Performance Corporation was doing a lot more than building manual shifters in 1970, and this special car is from a group of vehicles that Chrysler offered with Hurst-made changes that year. The legendary 300, introduced in 1955, was Chrysler’s flagship vehicle for many years, and for the new decade’s arrival, the company contracted to have 485 unique examples built under the 300s storied title, denoted as 300H models because of the Hurst connection. Announced to the public on February 17, 1970, they have been noted collector cars even from their beginnings.
This car features its matching-numbers 440 CI Chrysler TNT V-8 factory-rated at 375 HP with its 4-barrel carburetor and heavy-duty internal pieces. Known as the Super Commando in Plymouths and the Magnum in Dodges, this was the company’s top 4-barrel performance motor and limited to the hottest vehicle offerings. The 300H models were all two-door hardtops finished in EW1 Spinnaker White with beautiful satin tan accents, a custom fiberglass hood with functional scoop, twist-down front latches and a special fiberglass decklid treatment with integrated spoiler. These came with the A727 TorqueFlite automatic transmissions and a 3.23:1 highway-friendly final-gear ratio.
The suspension equipment was also upgraded on these models, which were loaded with power steering and power front disc brakes. The luxury was most evident inside, which here is wide saddle-leather seating featuring a center divider and power controls for both driver and passenger. These vehicles were further optioned with power windows, a power deck release, the A01 light group, an in-dash clock, and in this instance, an AM radio. The 300 theme is scrolled into the door panels.
A well-appointed vehicle even by today’s standards, these cars were finished with their own uniquely styled 15-inch Rallye wheels with special center caps, and this car has its Goodyear Polyglas GT H70-15 spare and rides on updated BF Goodrich TA radial tires. This is a wonderful opportunity to own a limited-production example of both Hurst’s and Chrysler’s legacy.
