Unique in the muscle-car world, the Chrysler letter cars are an incomparable blend of heavy-hitter power, premium luxury and full-sized style. First appearing in 1955, the Chrysler letter cars grew with the times, adding the best of new technology and features. Chrysler Corporation had tried some indulgent styling in the early 1960s, not all of it successful, but the letter cars always managed to find their way and make styling a huge part of the letter-car appeal. This gorgeous 1962 Chrysler 300H convertible showcases that year’s features, like the canted over-and-under headlights and, for the first time, a de-finned rear deck. The convertible is quite a rarity, with only 123 produced.
It’s got the big, high-powered 413 engine, outfitted with dual Carter carburetors, a solid-lifter cam and dual exhaust, bumping the horsepower rating to a lofty 380 HP. Transmission is the automatic with an in-dash pushbutton shifter, and the axle ratio is a top end-friendly 3.23:1. Power steering and power brakes are included, as are a power convertible top and factory air conditioning. Vivid Festival Red is the exterior color, which is set off by the black top and chrome wire wheels with spinner centers and wide whitewall tires. The car is fresh from a body-off restoration, completed in 2015, by letter-car specialist Don Hughes.
Gary Goers authentically recreated the factory tan-leather interior on the front bucket seats and sculpted rear seat. Beyond that there are wonderful letter-car features to discover everywhere, from the spherical Astra-Dome instrument cluster, dash-mounted rear-view mirror and 150 MPH speedometer, to the remote mirror, in-dash air-conditioning outlets, artfully sculpted steering wheel and extended center console. It’s a rare and spectacular example of Chrysler’s top-of-the-line, full-size, full-tilt automobile from a time when the corporation was flying high, and deservedly so.
