The era of the 1960s saw massive change in people’s tastes in automotive styling and design, and the Chrysler 300H from 1962 proved in some ways to be a forerunner of what was coming. The car here is one of a mere 123 Chrysler 300H Convertibles produced in 1962, and it has been restored to a beautiful standard. With Virgil Exner’s exit, the styling on the early 1960s Chrysler Corporation models quickly blended out the high fins, leaving just rounded vestiges of the past stretching out level with the overall body lines.
Moreover, the 1962 models were now lighter than before (as they were now based on the 122-inch wheelbase Newport unibody structure, which saved an estimated 400 pounds), and the torsion-bar suspension was dialed-in for better, firmer road feel. The 300H was powered by a 413/380 HP RB-type big-block engine, which was now back to an inline, dual-quad configuration instead of the more exotic ram induction used in prior years. Painted turquoise with gold-tone air cleaners over each Carter AFB, this mill is backed by the 3-speed TorqueFlite pushbutton automatic transmission, and this car has power steering and power brakes as standard equipment.
The color scheme here is the stunning Festival Red with a black convertible top and beautiful tan leather interior. The inside layout includes a unique four bucket-seat configuration with a full-length console featuring a built-in tachometer, a styled padded dash with floating gauges, power front seats, chrome pushbutton operation for many of the accessories, an AM radio and a two-tone steering wheel. The outside body lines are accented with a thin chrome side spear and similar rocker moldings, gold Chrysler front-fender script emblem, a rear-mounted radio antenna, 300H insignia, dual outside mirrors and rear rubber bumperettes.
The stunning finishing touches are factory wire wheels and a set of thin-line whitewall tires. Wearing its tri-color décor with style, this convertible is a wonderful opportunity to own one of the classics of Mopar history and do so in style.
