In 1955, Chrysler introduced the 300 model series, taking Detroit’s emerging styling and horsepower trends to new heights. By introducing factory performance components to bring its engine to an industry-high 300 HP in a sporty full-size body design, that first 300 started a legend that upgraded each year. By 1961, the 300G had found its power number at 375 HP for the Golden Lion V-8, a hot version of the 413 CI RB wedge engine featuring Chrysler’s exclusive ram-tube induction. This featured twin 4-barrel Carter AFB carburetors located on opposing plenums set a specific 30-inch distance from the intake valve, which subsequently created “sonic supercharging” at a given RPM level.
This long-ram design was for street use, but the engine also featured 10.1:1 compression and a forged-steel crankshaft. The fabulous car offered here was one of just 1,617 produced in 1961, a year noted for designer Virgil Exner’s Flight Sweep styling cues and sporting an original retail cost of close to $6,000. Covered in rich black paint with a lightly contrasting tan interior, this highway star features Chrysler’s A727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission and a 3.23:1 final gear ratio. Inside, the car features swivel front bucket seats with a full-length center console, ventilated leather upholstery and the “Control Center” instrument cluster with unique pearlescent night time illumination.
Noted in the hobby, this car won the Chrysler Cup award at the 2011 Chrysler 300 International meet, and was featured in both “Hemmings Classic Cars” in 2008 and again as a buyer’s guide reference automobile in “Hemmings Muscle Machines” in 2013; examples of both magazines are included with the sale. The 413/375 HP Golden Lion V-8 wedge engine has been rebuilt, the exterior repainted once, and the brightwork is re-chromed on this car, which features both power steering and brakes. This letter car has traveled only 55,000 believed-original miles.
With low production and luxury standard equipment, the 300 letter-series cars have become important icons of Chrysler’s postwar vehicle efforts; this well-appointed example offers an excellent opportunity to the discerning collector.
