The road racing portion of NASCAR racing is sometimes overshadowed by the “big ones” (both victories and wrecks) in the superspeedway environment, but for true aficionados of motor racing, turning both left and right is considered the proof of a driver’s ability. The car here is a 1998 NASCAR Cup-series Chevrolet Monte Carlo, built specifically as a road race entry by Buzz McCall, owner of American Equipment Racing. Operated out of Hess Racing of Mooresville, North Carolina, the chassis (No.
AER-971) was designed by Brad Francis, AER Design Engineer, for road racing and was driven in competition by Robby Gordon on June 28, 1998, in Sonoma, California, and by Ron Fellows on August 9, 1998, at Watkins Glen, New York. With a known ownership history from new, it has more recently participated in vintage race events under the tutelage of Bobby Gerhart, John Siefert, Bill McAnally, Russ Romer, Tom Stolarz, Chuck Fausel and James Lindly. Wearing the period Caterpillar sponsorship and Gordon signature roof lettering, this car is powered by a 358 CI/700 HP Chevrolet roller cam V-8 engine, rated at 560lb-ft of torque at 7,200 RPM.
Topped by a competition Holley 850cfm carburetor under a cowl induction air box, there is a Jerico 4-speed manual transmission behind it, as well as the period NASCAR-type differential, shocks, suspension and cooling components. This car has a 3,500-pound dry weight. The colorful black and yellow Caterpillar no. 96 livery is standout, complete with associate and product sponsorship decals while inside this car retains its fully-caged safety equipment. The single-seat interior has a Richardson seat cover, plus a toggle operation panel, Auto Meter gauges and dual MSD ignition boxes.
The outside retains road racing aerodynamic pieces, with Alcon brakes behind the black 15-inch steel racing wheels and Goodyear Eagle racing tires to make it stick. The opportunity to own a true part of this now-gone period of racing is here, ready for your enjoyment – going left, right or even standing still!
