From the late 1940s through the early 1960s, GM would stage auto shows throughout the country (although initially only at New York’s Waldorf Astoria)—the General Motors Motorama—to whet the public’s appetite for new cars and to boost sales. The extravagant Motoramas featured halo models from its brands, as well as prototypes and futuristic concept vehicles. On January 19, 1956, GM pulled the wraps off a new Emerald Green hardtop show car with a white interior and Corvette-like design cues. Named after the graceful African Antelope, the car was the Impala.

This 1967 Chevrolet Impala SS Convertible wears a fresh black paint job and represents the fourth generation of the model, introduced that year with redesigned and enhanced Coke-bottle styling that featured Corvette-inspired front and rear fender bulges. New safety features were introduced that year, including a fully collapsible energy-absorbing steering column and side marker lights. Under the hood resides the car’s matching-numbers 327/275 HP V-8, which was rated at 275 lb-ft of twist from the factory. The mill breathes in through a 4-barrel carburetor and out via a set of tubular headers and dual exhaust outlets.

Backed by an automatic transmission, motivation is sent to a Positraction rear end and on to the black, 20-inch US Mags wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich g-Force Sport tires. The front disc and rear drum brakes are power assisted, as is the steering rack. Laying down the new, power-operated black vinyl top reveals the black vinyl seats, the front buckets separated by the rare, full-length, factory SS console. The simulated walnut wood steering wheel frames the dash, which holds the factory Special Instrumentation Package: three large central dials for tachometer, speedometer and an electric clock, flanked by smaller oil pressure, engine temperature, fuel and ammeter on either side.

Cruising tunes are provided by an AM/FM radio with 8-track player. All that’s left to do is grab your sweetheart, drop the top, insert Jefferson Airplane’s “Surrealistic Pillow” in the 8-track and cruise down the road with “Somebody to Love” in the background.
