The Impala name was first used on a full-size concept car that shared styling elements with the Chevrolet Corvette at the 1956 GM Motorama show. Named after the African antelope, designers from Chevrolet and Pontiac derived what became the 1958 full-size lineup from this metallic green hardtop concept. The Impala went on to become one of Chevrolet’s most popular, recognized models, spanning production through 1985 and then between 1994 and 1996, and once more from 2000 to 2020. The first production Impala hit the showrooms in 1958, and it was an inimitable model, with 1959 ushering in a new frame, chassis and body that would sustain through the 1960 model year.
The new frame and body allowed for the Impala to sit considerably lower than the 1958 model year, and it was wider and heavier, which many felt provided a better-planted driving feel. A V-8 engine is backed by an automatic transmission. This Impala is finished in Roman Red and features dual, rear-mounted antennas, fender skirts, chrome bumpers, a host of brightwork inside and out, and wide whitewall tires wrapping red-painted steel wheels topped by polished wheel covers. The two-tone red and white bench-seat interior looks right out of the factory brochure and is protected by a white convertible top.
Meanwhile, an updated sound system allows for some modern entertainment that’s perfect for cruises.
