Following up on the smashing success of its full-size 1955-57 passenger-car lines and groundbreaking new small-block V-8 engines, Chevrolet launched new and totally redesigned full-size models for 1958. Riding upon General Motors’ all-new “Safety Girder” X-member frame design, Chevy bodies were fashionably longer, lower and wider than before. Featuring Motorama-inspired dream car styling cues, announced in Chevrolet advertisements as “Sculpturamic Styling,” the new cars included quad headlamps, neatly coved rear fenders, sculpted rear decks and bold trim accents.
At the top of the 1958 Chevrolet lineup, the Impala included all standard Bel Air features and much more to attract the hungry style-conscious buyers of the era. Standard Impala features included stylized ‘Impala’ scripts and emblems, ribbed body sill panels, imitation chrome scoops ahead of the rear wheels, a two-spoke deep-dish steering wheel, a rear speaker grille, triple taillight lenses to each side, and striking multi-tone upholstery. In addition to its one-year-only body design, the Impala featured a wide array of powerful small-block and “W-head” big-block V-8 power teams and the improved ride quality afforded by a new full coil-spring suspension.
Finished in Turquoise with a Tri-Tone interior, this 1958 Chevrolet Impala Convertible is powered by a 348 CI V-8 engine with Tri-Power induction, mated to an automatic transmission. Riding on an AccuAir adjustable suspension, the Impala is equipped with power brakes and steering, air conditioning, power windows, a Wonderbar signal-seeking radio, and “Continental” spare-tire kit, accented by chrome bumpers and riding on steel wheels mounting full-size wheel covers and 1950s-style wide whitewall tires.
