When it came to stylish utility, the Chevrolet El Camino was in a class of its own. This example is from its very first model season, 1959, and represented the successful coupling of passenger car accents from the Biscayne/Impala platforms, forming a two-person cab design and a functional open-rear bed. Treated to a frame-off refreshing with only 2,182 miles driven since being completed, it is customized in many ways. Part of its appeal lies underneath the hood, where a new LS3 V-8 engine has been installed.
Rated at 480 HP, it retains the Corvette-name engine covers, plus a chromed air intake with conical filter, polished accessories, a modern radiator with an electric fan and a smoothed engine bay. This is followed by a modern automatic transmission and a 12-bolt Positraction differential by Detroit Speed. Onto the powder-coated frame went an AccuAir suspension system, while 4-wheel Wilwood disc brakes using drilled and slotted rotors now slow it down. The exterior lines for 1959 heralded a brand-new look for Chevrolet, lower and wider than the transitional 1958 versions, featuring a much more refined wing-shaped rear trim layout that carried over to the tailgate on this model.
With the cat-eye tail lamps, it was unmistakable. The front end likewise used the premium chrome grille and quad headlamp layout, making the El Camino almost indistinguishable from the passenger car models when viewed head-on. Painted red with a cream-toned roof, that theme carries over to the interior. Beautifully rendered, there is a special center console with cup holders, power windows, a tow-tone steering wheel, accurate modern dash gauging, a radio and air conditioning. A column-mounted shifter with a reworked clear shift pattern and tilt column complete that, while the car’s biggest exterior changes are the Budnik polished five-spoke wheels and blackwall radial tires.
Many original buyers for these vehicles desired the utility this exciting model offered, but this example, with its show-quality rendering, will be perfect at home or anywhere else.
