This 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle SS shows the outstanding quality and beautiful finish that typify the automotive offerings from the Eddie Vannoy Collection. The year 1967 was truly a vintage one for Chevrolet’s versatile Chevelle, which was in its second model year after a thorough redesign for 1966. After the 1965 Z16 set the stage for the first production big-block Chevelle, the SS package had evolved from an elevated trim option available with any engine to one specifying big-block power, beefed-up handling and an extensive option list. The restyled 1967 Chevelle gained visual heft with new front fenders, hood and rear end treatment featuring wraparound tail lights.
Under the new hood was a choice of three 396 CI big-block Mark IV engines ranging from the hydraulic-cam 325 HP L35 version to the solid-lifter 375 HP L78, which was no longer listed in Chevelle literature but still available. Right in the middle was the L34, which incorporated a more aggressive cam, a stronger reinforced block and a larger Holley 4-barrel carburetor to crank out 350 HP at 5,200 RPM and 415 lb-ft of torque at 3,600. A bargain at $105.35, the L34 equipped with this example’s Muncie 4-speed manual transmission delivered a 0-60 MPH time of 6.5 seconds and a 15.3 second quarter mile—excellent numbers given the less-than-stellar stock tires available at the time.
Presenting in factory Code A Tuxedo Black with a matching black vinyl roof and black interior, this 138-VIN 1967 Chevelle Super Sport is fitted with power disc brakes, front and rear sway bars, headers, and dual exhaust with chrome tips. Equipped with a tinted windshield, a walnut-grained sport steering wheel, bench seat, in-dash clock and an AM radio, it comes outfitted in classic Day Two style with BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires on American Racing Torq Thrust wheels, a column-mounted 8,000 RPM tachometer and auxiliary Auto Gage oil pressure and coolant temperature gauges.
