The new Chevelle arrived with great fanfare after its rare Z16 1965 predecessor had caught the attention of the public. This special 1966 Chevelle will get plenty of attention as well as a modern reimaging of the heralded model still recognized as one of Chevrolet’s best-known 1960s performance cars. This particular vehicle’s body-off, nut-and-bolt restoration was recently finished in May 2024 and wears its factory color combination of Tuxedo Black with a red interior.
Beneath the hood is a period-correct 396/375 HP RPO L78 V-8 big-block Chevrolet engine, which is part of this vehicle’s rebuilt driveline that also includes a 4-speed manual transmission (appropriate for this factory 4-speed car) and 12-bolt rear end. Visible underhood within the detailed engine bay is the upgraded serpentine belt drive system, polished power steering and power brake accessories, aluminum intake, open-element air cleaner with callout decals, and the factory-look chrome engine dress-ups. Underneath, this car is further enhanced by its 4-wheel disc brakes.
As noted, this particular Chevelle came new with a red interior, making it one of 5,570 Canadian Chevelles produced with a red interior for 1966, and the refreshed components inside showcase front bucket seating, a center console and associated clock, a factory-design chrome shift handle, retro radio upgrade, Chevelle steering wheel center cap, red carpeting, Super Sport glovebox trim and the knee-knocker tachometer. In the trunk is a fresh floor mat and covered spare tire. The exterior is a contrasting combination of rich black paint and chrome body trim.
The extensive quantity of trim includes multiple SS396 emblems, Super Sport rear quarter panel identification, the stamped stainless grille and associated headlamp bezels, wheel arch moldings, ribbed lower rockers and performance hood inserts. A final selection is the multispoke U.S. Mags polished wheels equipped with modern low-profile tires that elicit a 21st-century accenting. This general styling was one that lasted two Chevelle model seasons, 1966-67, and profiled what midsize performance cars could look like. Here, upgraded throughout but retaining the DNA of the past, it still gets attention as a great example of this fact.
