This 1939 Cadillac 60 Special Sedan was one of the first automobiles designed in collaboration between Harley Earl and his young protégé, Bill Mitchell. The 60 Special showcased a new convertible-style notchback roof design and smoothed body panels largely shorn of the chromed trim that was then an industry convention. Dispensing with running boards enabled the use of a wider frame, allowing the floor to be dropped down between the frame rails with a corresponding decrease in roof height without losing passenger headroom or sacrificing torsional rigidity.
The rearward placement of the cabin opened enough room in the front fenders to completely enclose the dual side-mounted spares, further emphasizing the 60 Special’s clean lines and uncluttered surfaces, and a new, more pointed frontal treatment proved very popular with Cadillac buyers. In the power department, Cadillac’s 346/130 HP flathead V-8 and 3-speed manual transmission moved the substantial 60 Special with ease. One of 5,513 Cadillac 60 Specials built in 1939, this Pastel Yellow example features Fleetwood body-style 39-6019S, a four-door sedan built on a 127-inch-wheelbase chassis.
Riding on Coker Classic wide whitewalls mounted on red painted wheels with chromed trim rings and center caps, its bright exterior is stylishly adorned with fender skirts, chromed bumpers with guards, stone guards and a Goddess hood ornament; “1939 National Air Races” and “Re-Elect Roosevelt” stickers in the rear window lend a nostalgic period touch. Cosmetically restored and mechanically freshened, it presents in beautiful overall condition, with a clean and fresh beige interior incorporating a pushbutton AM radio, in-dash clock, heater, a compass and controls for the dual outside articulated spotlight mirrors.
This 60 Special participated in the 1996 VMCCA American Automobile 100th Anniversary Celebration, which also marked the 50th Anniversary of the Glidden Tour and the 15th Anniversary of the Chrome Glidden Tour.
