The excellence that has always defined Cadillac was at a peak in the early 1950s, the era when this gorgeous 1953 Cadillac Series 62 was created. Having moved forward from the immense demand following World War II that kept advances limited, cars like this coupe were now among the highest status symbols of the era, and in some ways, they could be favored as “classic” over the restyling that would emerge at the end of the decade.
Indeed, this pillarless two-door design with its curved yet conservative body lines seems almost timeless as an example of luxury in the American motorcar oft-referred to as “Standard of the World.” The big news for 1953 was the new 210 HP rating on the OHV 331 CI Cadillac V-8 engine, which in this example is backed by an automatic transmission. The near-metallic Emerald Green paint with the light Mint Green upper exterior is accented by the newly redesigned grille and bumpers with bullet tips, low-profile fins, deep-edged gold V emblems, a mid-body side spear and vertical rear quarter ribbing that blends the fender line almost seamlessly into the lower rocker trim.
This stylish look continues into the green two-tone cloth interior, which includes an AM radio, heater/defroster, in-dash clock, glovebox, accented dash coloring in deep blue, a two-spoke, two-tone steering wheel, fluted chrome footbox and door trim, and plush cloth upholstery, with the rear seat equipped with a fold-down armrest. Of course, the sense of safety came in part from the boldly styled chrome grille, bumpers and trim, but class meant rear fender skirts and wide whitewall tires mounted on steel wheels with full-size covers. Overall, the presentation of this motorcar is one of refinement and true Fisher-bodied quality.
As a pinnacle model from this era that is the result of a no-expense-spared, body-off-frame restoration by award-winning RX Autoworks of North Vancouver, British Columbia, this 1953 Series 62 Cadillac is indeed still a standard by which to be measured.
