Cadillac rolled out the future of road-going personal luxury with the 1967 Eldorado, and with just 31,795 miles showing on the odometer, this 1968 Cadillac Eldorado is a low-mileage snapshot in time. The style and technology tour de force is the culmination of almost a decade of development that began with the clandestine XP-727 program. Lofty explorations into V-16 power and 1930s-influenced style became production reality with an elegant design by Bill Mitchell and underpinnings based in part on the Oldsmobile Toronado. A padded roof and blue paint complement the sleek hardtop coupe lines here, and concealed headlamps and a chrome grille and bumpers accent low-slung style.
The 472 CI V-8 engine and automatic transmission power team deliver an abundance of power to the front wheels. Power steering, power front brakes and whitewall tires team up for Cadillac ride and road control. Engineering and elegance coalesce in the expansive black interior. Front-wheel drive eliminated the intrusive drivetrain tunnel and made room for six-passenger luxury, even though the sports-styled coupe was the lowest and shortest Cadillac in the fleet. Automatic climate control, an AM/FM radio and power windows and locks deliver the comfort, entertainment and convenience expected of a Cadillac. Rosewood-pattern dash inserts and a clock add a touch of opulence.
