This beautiful 1962 Cadillac DeVille Hardtop is a wonderful example of the breed. The black exterior is contrasted with bright stainless steel wheel covers mounted on a set of wide whitewall tires. The black and white theme is carried over into the interior appointments. As with all Cadillac DeVilles, the car is generously fitted with a plethora of standard equipment, including an automatic transmission, factory air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows, a Wonderbar AM radio, the Autronic eye and six-way power seats. The 1960s ushered in a new era for Cadillac exterior styling.
The second generation of the DeVille series (1961-64) was a radical departure in terms of design language. The predecessor generation of Cadillac under the direction of Harley Earl flaunted flamboyance through large rear tail fins, indulgent use of chrome trim and excess ornamentation. In 1961, Bill Mitchell, the recently appointed chief stylist for General Motors, created a new design persona that was decidedly more subdued and restrained. The 1962 Cadillac DeVille Hardtop used crisp angular lines and a limited amount of adornment.
Mitchell sculpted the body with an origami crease along the beltline, incorporated subtle skeg fins along the lower body with a thin chrome trim running three quarters of the length of the side, and opted for discreet-sized rear tail fins. The design resonated with the Cadillac crowd at the showroom, with DeVille sales reaching 110,379 for model year 1962. The 1962 Cadillac DeVille Hardtop is still coveted, with collectors attesting to its design brilliance and timelessness.
