Model year 1964 marked a watershed year for General Motors’ Cadillac Division. Continuing success through the 1950s and early 1960s convinced Cadillac General Manager Harold Warner to announce an expansion of almost a half million square feet of floor space and the conversion of 200,000 square feet to manufacturing facilities. Cadillac production continued unabated during the planning and expansion, reaching a record high of 165,959 vehicles as new construction began on July 8, 1964.
Cadillac engineering continued its inexorable advance with the introduction of a new, more refined 429/340 HP V-8 engine that, with its standard 4-barrel carburetor, provided generous improvements in both power and performance. In its test of a 1964 model, The Autocar Magazine recorded a top speed of 123 MPH achieved “with contemptuous ease,” while noting its “several luxuries” that included an adjustable steering wheel, a full range of power accessories and luxurious passenger comforts.
Their concluding summation declared, “As a dynamic object, [the 1964 Cadillac] represents the highest standards attainable in the most important respects.” This 1964 Cadillac Deville Convertible is a particularly glamorous and beautifully finished showcase of that model’s signature simplicity of design. The last Cadillac to wear the classic tailfin treatment originated in 1949 by GM styling giant Harley J. Earl, it is finished in the handsome combination of a silver metallic exterior with a power-operated, black convertible top, matching black top boot and a thoroughly opulent interior overflowing with supple red leather upholstery and brightly chromed trim.
With an extensive list of standard features that includes an automatic transmission, power steering and brakes, dual exhaust, power windows, tinted glass and an in-dash clock, it also offers an AM/FM radio, fender skirts and turbine wheel covers over white-stripe tires.
