Famously known as Bu’Wicked, this custom built Buick Special is an award-winning time capsule of early aughts custom excellence, immortalized as a playable car in three successive generations of the Sony Playstation Gran Turismo video game franchise. Originally built from the frame rails out to the signature triple VentiPorts by Bill McGlaughlin’s Hot Rod Fabrication in Auburn, Washington, the unique street machine earned its way into the game by winning the inaugural SEMA Gran Turismo Award in 2003, and was subsequently featured in Popular Hot Rodding magazine.
Rich Thayer of R&J Customs in Buckley, Washington, smoothed the coupe’s sheet metal with some subtle body mods and laid down the two-tone Lexus Jade Mica over Silver Jade finish. Jon and Gabby Lind of Eugene, Oregon, handcrafted the color-keyed custom cabin from the leather-wrapped roll cage and sculpted door panels to the bucket seats and center shift console. Green tinted glass offers a comforting view from behind the Momo steering wheel with a bespoke tri-shield Buick crest horn button.
The Special is powered by a supercharged, fuel-injected 455 CI Buick V-8 equipped with 8.5:1 compression J&E forged pistons, T/A Performance Stage II Street Eliminator aluminum heads and a Procharger centrifugal supercharger. A tuned intake manifold, headers and dual exhaust help the blown big block send 700 dyno-tested HP through the Richmond 6-speed double-overdrive transmission, and a Ford 9-inch 3.55-ratio differential with Eaton Trac-Lok limited-slip dispatches power to the pavement. The custom rides on an Art Morrison Enterprises chassis fitted with Heidt’s independent front suspension with stainless steel A-arms and a multilink rear suspension with a Scribner rear axle housing.
Baer brakes with massive drilled and slotted rotors lurk behind staggered Budnik Arrowhead wheels with Michelin tires for maximum road control. The Playstation version Bu’Wicked can be acquired at a fictional Buick dealer in the Gran Turismo game. The genuine, fire-breathing, heavy-metal original is heading for Indy and looking for its next real driver.
