For 1958, General Motors’ full-size cars underwent a major restyling, bringing about a line of cars that were longer, lower, wider and seemingly heavier than their predecessors. Buick embraced the chrome bull by the horns and came out shining with what appeared to be more brightwork than any other car on the planet had ever worn. This Buick Special Convertible exhibits the effort well, and with its two-tone red and white finish, it’s a car that’s very hard to miss.

Designed by Harley Earl, this Special emerged from a restoration in 2007 powered by the 364 CI Nailhead V-8 engine with hydraulic lifters and a 4-barrel downdraft carburetor, with a Hydra-Matic 2-speed automatic transmission channeling power to the rear end. Despite the Buick’s imposing size, power steering and power brakes make it much easier to maneuver, while a power convertible top makes it simple to bring the outside in—or seal it out for a cozier motoring experience. The interior is much like the exterior, with red and white upholstery and an extensive use of brightwork. Passengers will enjoy the clock, pushbutton radio, full instrumentation and luxurious bench seat.

Rolling on wide whitewall tires wrapping chrome wire wheels with spinners, this 1958 Buick Special Convertible shows why ’58 Buicks have long been a style statement, a bold declaration of middle-class American prosperity and exuberance. Even the highly styled grille was famously known as the Fashion-Aire Dynastar Grille. Chrome eyebrows over the twin headlights stretched back and gently dipped down the body, creating a natural separation for two-tone paint, arcing over the rear wheel wells to the impossibly large rear bumpers.

The rear fenders were accentuated with quarter shields just aft the doors, from which thick insert moldings stretched back to massive chrome housings for the tail lights, the entire glittering scene serving as a study in brightwork.
