Shown at the 2013 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, this 1956 Buick Special, known as “Nailed,” was also a Detroit Autorama Great 8 Finalist in 2013. Set on an Art Morrison chassis with a C6 Corvette front suspension and a 4-link rear suspension, it’s powered by a 413 CI twin-turbocharged Nailhead FX V-8 engine with Rad Rides digital injection, custom headers and exhaust system, all backed by a Bowler 4L80E automatic transmission. Finished in Grey Slate Metallic with a matching black and gray interior, Nailed is absolutely rife with details and boasts a seemingly infinite number of custom fabricated touches, some obvious, some not so much.
For example, a digital screen is hidden behind the old center-mounted radio grille; the interior stitching is copper matching the gauge needles; the twin turbos lurk within the fake oil bath air cleaner; interestingly, Rad Rides even changed the firing order from 12784563 to 15634278, stating the change will improve crankshaft reliability. When it was built by Troy Trepanier’s Rad Rides of Manteno, Illinois, the unique decision was made to keep the original 322 CI Nailhead V-8 engine and modify it rather than use a crate engine. Since there aren’t a lot of performance parts available for the original engine, Rad Rides had to custom engineer and fabricate most of the parts themselves.
The bottom end was strengthened with new main caps and a pan girdle, both CNC machined in-house. A set of Carillo I-Beam connecting rods, one-off pistons and a custom-ground billet steel crankshaft were also installed. The modified heads were fitted with LS valves and Beehive valve springs. A 6-stage dry sump oiling system was installed complete with a custom oil pan. The portholes, or Ventiports in Buickese, are functional, the bumpers were shortened and sectioned, the front turn signals were shaved, the pinstripes are copper and the plating is nickel.
