During the mid- to late-1950s, the United States seemed to be twirling in a perpetual state of optimistic bliss. This was echoed in automotive design across the board, and Buick arguably exemplified the cheerful image with a fine balance between elegant and youthful styling, as reflected by this 1957 Buick Special. Finished in Mint Green with a matching green interior, this 1957 Buick Special two-door hardtop benefits from a frame-off restoration. It’s powered by a 346 CI Nailhead V-8 engine and Dynaflow 2-speed automatic transmission, with a Carter AFB 4-barrel carburetor feeding the engine and a Torque Tube open rear end with 3.07 gearing spinning the wheels.

Equipped with power steering, the stylish Special rides on 15-inch chrome wire wheels wearing Coker Classic whitewall tires. The striking exterior gleams with updated glass and polished chrome components, while the rear window is split into three sections by the roof for a nearly concept look. Dual exhaust exits through the large rear bumpers and a grinning grille resides above the front bumper. The chassis features an independent front suspension and rear coil springs, a combination Buick promised back in the day would provide a superbly balanced ride. The interior is fitted with a split front bench seat, a three-spoke steering wheel, stock gauges and an in-dash clock.

In 1936, Buick’s most affordable model, the Series 40, became the Buick Special Series 40, remaining in the entry-level segment for the division through 1958, excepting wartime. While the Special would remain a relatively low-cost Buick, special packages could be added to create a sportier or more posh vehicle, such as the Special Riviera, which debuted in 1955. The 1950s saw Buick blossom leaps and bounds, becoming one of America’s “it” cars to have and be seen in and rivaling even Cadillac, Packard and Lincoln. Their unique styling language blended elegance and an easy athleticism, which spoke volumes to the younger well-to-do set—a fabulous market for any product to be in.
