In 1953, Buick celebrated its 50th Anniversary in great style by introducing the exclusive, expensive, limited edition Skylark convertible. Part of a GM trifecta of specially designed and equipped vehicles, the Skylark was marketed simultaneously with the Cadillac Eldorado and Oldsmobile Fiesta. Styled by Harley Earl, the Skylark was built on the large Roadmaster platform and shared its drivetrain as well. Costing around $4,300, nearly $50,000 in 2021 money, it was the costliest Buick in the division. With 1,690 Skylarks sold, it was the most successful of the three, giving Earl credence to carry on for 1954.

Radically restyled, the 1954 Skylarks shared the smaller, more athletic Century platform and featured stretched wheel well arches with painted inners, a tapering rear deck with large chrome fin tail lights and a small bevy of other details that set it apart. Only 836 were sold in 1954, the last year for Skylark until 1961, when the name reappeared as Buick’s compact car. This 1954 Skylark Convertible was part of a museum collection and has recently had work performed on it, including the installation of new motor mounts, a new gas tank and sending unit, new fuel pump, battery, belts and hoses, and a rebuild of the carburetor.

It’s also had a little cosmetic bodywork including some paint and replacement of the hydraulic lines, including those for the windows and the top. Powered by the 322 CI Fireball V-8 engine and Dynaflow automatic transmission, the Skylark is presented in exquisite black with a red interior and convertible top. Rolling on chrome wire wheels with Uniroyal wide whitewall tires, the halo Buick is equipped with power windows, a dash clock and a pushbutton radio. To be sold with the owner’s guide, dealership brochure and parts catalogue, this rare Buick is certain to be one of those crown jewels for any collection.
