General Motors’ Motorama Show launched in 1949, enticing the public’s imagination with dreamy rides and bright futures. For 1953, the dreamy rides were coming to fruition in the form of four exciting convertibles: Chevrolet’s Corvette, Oldsmobile’s Fiesta, Cadillac’s Eldorado and Buick’s Skylark. Each was available to order and ready for further inspection at local agencies, and each absolutely sparked the imagination of motorists everywhere. Every one of the dream cars were limited editions and each held price tags reflecting their exclusivity, the Buick Skylark commanding $5,000 or nearly $50,000 today.
For Buick, the launch of the Skylark was a double whammy, not only producing a remarkable car indicative of the future, but also celebrating Buick’s 50th anniversary of business. The company sold 1,690 Skylark convertibles in 1953, outselling the other dream cars by a fair margin and largely setting the tone of future Buicks to come. This Skylark was the subject of a body-off restoration and is powered by the famous 322/180 HP Fireball V-8 mated here to an automatic transmission. The V-8 was a breakout engine that ended the era of the straight-8 engines, with 1953 marking the first of the Buick V-8s.
Fitted with power steering, power brakes, a power bench seat, power windows and a power convertible top, the Skylark was also a technical knockout for the day. This Buick Skylark is finished in Matador Red with a white convertible top, and the interior is a study in the same color scheme. Rolling on chrome wire wheels with wide whitewall tires, the Skylark was a showstopper in 1953 and continues to be a dream car among dream cars. Full-radius wheel wells, a lowered front windscreen, specialized detailing inside and out, the wire wheels, and so much more fueled the dreams of many and absolutely showed great things that could be had.
