Designated by the Classic Car Club of America as a Full Classic, this award-winning 1940 Buick Series 90 Limited Touring Sedan has been one of the mainstays of the Del De Young Collection of fine, vintage Buicks since 1989, winning both Buick Club of America Gold in 1994 and an AACA Junior Award in 2000. Like the other outstanding examples in the Del De Young Collection, it is exceedingly rare, being one of just 832 produced, that figure accounting for less than 0.3 percent of total Buick production in 1940.

Still looking to increase Buick sales, Division President Harlow Curtice added two more series: the Series 50 Super built on the Series 40 Special’s chassis and components, and the redesignated Series 70 Roadmaster that shared the Century’s 126-inch wheelbase chassis. This redirection of capital limited styling and engineering revisions across the Buick model range, limiting outward design changes to a slightly remodeled front end as well, but the eight-passenger Series 90s remained the luxury flagships, cars that rivaled Cadillac for opulence and engineering excellence.

Offered with a list price of $2,096, the Series 90 Touring Sedan was one of three body styles available in this exclusive series, and it was chosen by many over the Limousine model due to its spacious passenger cabin, which eschewed that model’s folding rear jump seats in favor of a luggage locker. In addition, the Touring Sedan relied on the same 320 CI Dynaflash Straight Eight OHV engine and column-shifted 3-speed manual transmission. Standard equipment included a rear-compartment cigarette lighter and ashtray, dual side-mount spare tires with covers, full side glass with front and rear butterfly-style vent windows and large rear-quarter windows.

In addition to those features, this Yosemite Gray 1940 Series 90 Touring Sedan from the Del De Young Collection also boasts wide whitewall tires on painted wheels with chrome trim rings and center caps, and chrome front and rear bumper guards as well.
