Buick revised its top-of-the-line Series 90 for 1938, stretching the wheelbase to 140 inches. A new front grille featured larger horizontal bars in two segments separated by a body-color metal divider, and the 1937 models’ hood trim strips were replaced with cascading chromed louvers for added visual impact. Extended bullet-shaped headlights, matching signal lights and engineering improvements, especially, made the new Buicks the best ever throughout the model range.

A new channel-section X-frame and softer body mounts were used to stiffen the chassis and improve cabin isolation; “Unisteel” all-steel body construction included Fisher Body’s new “Turret Top” roofs that dispensed with the old fabric roof inserts; domed aluminum pistons added compression to the “Dynaflash” 320 CI straight-8 engine for an additional 20 HP; and the industry’s first all-coil-spring suspension and enlarged shock absorbers significantly improved the Buick’s already excellent ride.

Adding to the improved lineup, Buick introduced the highly exclusive Model 91, a six-passenger touring sedan limited to just 441 examples—less than 0.3 percent of total Buick production in 1938 and aimed squarely at the rising class of American professionals and executives. While appearing identical to the eight-passenger Model 90 Limited Touring Sedan, the Model 91L offered seating for six passengers with extra room in the rear made by dropping the two “jump seats” featured in the Model 90. The 1938 Buick Series 91 Limited Touring Sedan offered here has been part of the Del De Young Collection of fine vintage Buicks since 1995.

Classified by the CCCA as a Full Classic, this beautifully preserved example is finished in Rembrandt Black with a complementing gray interior. Its wide whitewall tires on matching painted steel wheels with chromed trim rings and center caps are supplemented with matching dual side-mount spare tires with covers. One of the rarest of the prewar Buicks, it runs under the power of the 320 CI Dynaflash straight-8 engine mated to a 3-speed manual transmission.
