This stunning and exceedingly rare 1942 Buick Series 91F eight-passenger Limited Formal Sedan from the Del De Young Collection is Body No. 1, the first Buick Limited produced for the 1942 model year. Only 85 were built; in sum, they amounted to less than one tenth of one percent of total Buick Division production that year. Harley Earl’s 1938 Y-Job concept made its influence apparent on the 1942 Buick models in the restyled front end that featured an almost literal adaptation of that car’s chromed “waterfall” front grille, the widest and boldest yet on any Buick with 29 thick vertical bars set inside a prominent contoured frame over a robust bumper.

Front fenders continued their journey toward the rear quarter panels, extending halfway into the front doors. To emphasize this feature, twin parallel chromed strips called “speedlines” ran the full length of the front and rear wheelhouses. By 1942, Buick’s Series 90 Limited had encroached deep into Cadillac territory; it was arguably sleeker, more stylish and both quicker and faster thanks to its 320 CI Fireball Straight Eight engine. In contrast, with lesser models, Series 90 Buicks had the “bustle back” trunks that were featured so prominently in 1930s-era models. They rode on a 139-inch wheelbase chassis that added a full 10 inches to overall length compared to the Roadmaster models.

The first Buick model named by the CCCA as a Full Classic, this exemplary Limited Formal Sedan from the Del De Young Collection is cloaked in aptly named Royal Maroon paint and incorporates fender skirts, front and rear bumper guards, and wide whitewall tires with chromed trim rings and center caps. The plush interior features a divider window separating the front and rear passenger compartments, a speaker system and twin folding jump seats to bring capacity to eight passengers. Part of the Del De Young Collection since 1993, it earned the AACA Senior Award in 2002. *Contrary to the printed catalog description, this vehicle will not be offered with the BCA award
