As the 1950s excitedly reached for the Space Age, Detroit embraced the movement entirely with styling that suggested futurism through fins, chrome and lots of glass area. The days of building station wagon bodies with wood were largely a thing of the past, with all-steel bodies offering lower maintenance, lower production costs and higher strength and safety. For 1957, Buick took the idea of the modern wagon a step further and combined the strength of the steel body with the visionary design of the Riviera four-door hardtop, creating the Caballero station wagon.

Introduced for 1957, the Caballero was a visually captivating car and an engineering wonder—a unique, pillarless hardtop station wagon. Based on the Century platform, the Caballero provided occupants a remarkably airy ride and astonishing visibility. Buick normally built some of the more expensive station wagons of the time, and the Caballero was no exception, though sales still reached nearly 11,000 units in 1957. This 1957 Buick Caballero Wagon benefits from a 10-year, frame-on restoration yielding it a two-tone blue and white exterior finish with the brightwork expected of a 1950s Buick.

The blue interior complements the exterior and features a pushbutton radio, in-dash clock and a front bench seat. The carpeted load floor stretches up the rear seatbacks, which fold flat for even more cargo space. The V-8 engine and automatic transmission were rebuilt, and the car rides on Avon whitewall tires with Kelsey Hayes Caballero-branded chrome wire wheels. The Caballero returned for 1958, but with fewer units sold and a major design shift underway; it was ultimately the end of the line for the Caballero, with 1959 ushering in a new lineup.
