Chassis No.: WBA121307

€483,000 EUR | Sold

  • Works car driven by Steve Soper in 1992
  • Two DTM race wins to its credit
  • Formerly on long-term museum display (from 1998)
  • Restored from the chassis upwards
  • Still highly original
  • Original FIA homologation document and PSV document.

This actual car chassis 'WBA121307' was delivered to Team Bigazzi, which together with Schnitzer was one of the two factory backed teams for the 1992 Deutsche Tourenwagen Meistershaft (DTM) season. Being a works car, it received improved chassis specifications which were not available to privateers. It was driven very successfully by British touring car ace, Steve Soper. Across a demanding season of 10 rounds, Soper competed against factory-backed rivals, demonstrating the enduring competitiveness of the E30 platform even as newer challengers emerged. He would achieve two victories that year: at Avus (round seven) and the Norisring (round 14) respectively.

Soper finished the season 9th overall in the DM championship. Within that environment, chassis 'WBA121307' played its part in one of the final chapters of Group A touring car racing, an era now regarded as one of the purest forms of the sport; indeed, this 'time warp' M3 is a significant piece of BMW history, being the very last BMW winner in DTM. By the early 1990s, the DTM had evolved into one of the most fiercely contested arenas in global motor sport, a battleground where precision engineering and raw driving talent collided at every corner. At the heart of it all stood a car that had already earned legendary status: the BMW M3 E30.

Originally conceived as a homologation special, the M3 was designed with racing in mind, its widened arches, aggressive aerodynamics, and high-revving four-cylinder engine all shaped by the demands of competition. By the time the 1992 season arrived, the E30 M3 had already cemented its place as one of the most successful touring cars ever built, with victories across DTM, European, and World Touring Car Championships. Chassis 'WBA121307' represents the final evolution of this iconic platform, developed to its absolute limit under FIA Group A regulations before the rulebook would soon usher in a new, more complex era.

In this form, the car was a pure expression of balance and driver engagement: lightweight, rear-wheel drive, and powered by BMW's renowned S14 engine, the latter enlarged to 2.5 litres and capable of producing well over 350 horsepower in full race trim. Unlike the technologically extreme machines that would follow, the E30 M3 relied on something more elemental. It demanded precision and rewarded bravery, and in the hands of the right driver was devastatingly effective.

Today, the significance of the E30 M3 extends far beyond its results; it represents a philosophy: a time when racing cars were still deeply connected to their road-going counterparts, yet honed into razor-sharp instruments of competition. Its success was not built on excess, but on balance, precision and relentless development. In 1993 this M3 was sold via Mr Isert to Czech driver Jens Venc, and raced again in the DTM that year in 'Kaucuk' colours. After that it did a handful of races in the Czech Republic in 1994 before being retired, and since 1998 it has been on museum display.

When purchased by the vendor, the car was in original untouched condition: very authentic and still retaining all of its original parts, including Steve Soper's own steering wheel. The car was totally dismantled and restored in-house from the chassis upwards, with a lot of attention paid to keeping it as original as possible. Shortly after the restoration ended, the vendor organised a reunion in Munich with Steve Soper, the Bigazzi Team, and period BMW Motorsport heads, all of whom signed the car.

As a genuine DTM car from the final season of Group A competition, chassis 'WBA121307' is a rare and evocative piece of motor sport history, a reminder of a time when touring car racing was defined by driver skill, mechanical purity, and the unmistakable sound of a naturally aspirated engine pushed to its limits. The car comes with its original FIA homologation document and a PSV document.
