In January 2015, Bentley shocked the motoring world with the announcement of its first sport utility vehicle. Dubbed Bentayga, its exotic model name was derived from Roque Bentayga, a famous highland rock formation in the Canary Islands. It was also a portmanteau of Bentley and Taiga, the world’s largest transcontinental snow forest. Model development dates back to the Bentley EXP 9 F concept exhibited at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show—itself based upon the Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform—with a mighty 6.0L/600 HP W-12 engine powering it. The production Bentayga was based on feedback from the EXP 9 F with styling revised for production.
Debuted at Frankfurt in September 2015, the production-ready Bentayga featured rigid unitized construction and a full-time all-wheel drive system. Despite its generous proportions and Bentley’s characteristic luxury and opportunities for bespoke personalization, the Bentayga is capable of delivering truly shocking performance including a 187 MPH top speed, making it quite likely the ultimate vehicle of its kind.
