Although Rolls-Royce and Bentley will forever be inexorably linked in the annals of automotive history, each have their own distinctive identity and purpose. Whereas Rolls-Royce appeals to the stately and conservative, Bentley chooses to be the more flamboyant and performance-oriented of the two ultra-luxury British automakers. Case in point, this 1999 Bentley Azure Convertible is the quintessential playboy’s dream car. An elegant four-seater convertible equipped with a mammoth turbocharged and intercooled 6.75L V-8 engine, this 5,750-pound behemoth can reach a terminal velocity of 150 MPH.
The engine produces 385 HP, but the real grunt is the result of massive torque, a tree stump-pulling 553 lb-ft at only 2,000 RPM enabling the big open-air Bentley to post a surprisingly quick 0-60 MPH time of 6.3 seconds. It’s amazing performance, especially considering that these speeds were achieved almost 20 year ago. This stunning Azure has been driven a mere 16,185 miles since new and elegantly presents in triple black contrasted by chrome alloy 17-inch Bentley performance wheels. The interior is simply gorgeous, richly appointed in black Connolly leather with a matching black Wilton wool carpet.
The dashboard, center console and upper door sills are fitted with burled walnut, highlighted with straight-grain walnut surrounds that are matched and finished to a mirror-like sheen. These handcrafted cars were incredibly labor intensive to build. The body shell and convertible top mechanism was built at the Pininfarina facility in Italy and required major reinforcement to the frame to maintain the structural integrity of this topless status symbol. Everything was then shipped to Bentley Motors Limited in Crewe, England, for final assembly.
Quality of this dimension requires both money and time, with only 141 Bentley Azure convertibles built in model-year 1999 and a purchase price approaching $400,000. All it takes is one walk around this car to understand its exclusivity and presence.
