The Bentley Arnage was conceived in the mid-1990s as the English marque sought to replace the outdated Mulsanne, which had been available since 1980. Breaking from tradition—and with guidance from its parent company, Vickers—Bentley selected a powerplant from an external manufacturer, opting for BMW’s 4.4-litre M62 V-8. However, the engine under the bonnet was no standard unit. Tuned by Cosworth Engineering, another subsidiary of Vickers, the 4.4-litre M62 was twin-turbocharged and developed 349 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque. By comparison, a standard naturally aspirated 4.4-litre M62 developed 282 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.
Following the 1998 takeover battle for Rolls-Royce and Bentley between BMW and Volkswagen, the former had threatened to cease providing engines for Bentley if the latter were to assume control of Rolls-Royce. Volkswagen could not accept the risk of working with its main rival, so repurposed the older, Bentley-made L-Series 6.75-litre engine from the Turbo R for the 1999 model year and badged the car as “Arnage Red Label”. The “Arnage Green Label” followed in 2000, utilising the last of the BMW engines, before Volkswagen phased out their rival’s powerplant from Bentley’s production line.
This example is an Arnage Green Label, powered by the Cosworth-tuned BMW twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre M62 engine; records indicate it underwent a pre-delivery service on 12 May 1999 at Harwoods of Sussex. This Arnage is finished in Peacock Waterbase, sitting on 17-inch silver alloy wheels. Inside, the interior is upholstered in Magnolia Hide, with Peacock Hide highlights on the seats, steering wheel, and dashboard. The door cards, centre console and lower dash pad are trimmed in Magnolia and the carpets are woven in Peacock with Magnolia piping.
Accompanying the Arnage is a tool kit, Bentley Owner’s Handbook, Service Handbook, Service Schedule, and Record book. The odometer shows under 52,000 miles at the time of cataloguing.
