Reviving a famous model name from Aston Martin's past, the DBS was based on the DB9 and replaced the outgoing Vanquish S as the company's top-of-the-range supercar. Before the DBS entered production, the world got a mouth-watering preview when one appeared in the film
Casino Royale
(2006), Daniel Craig's debut in the role of James Bond. The DBS also appeared in the opening sequence of Quantum of Solace, the follow up film released in 2008. When the model was re-launched as the DBS
Superleggera
in 2018, it too would soon gain the evocative 'James Bond' credentials, featuring in Daniel Craig's last outing as 007:
No Time to Die
(2020).
Taking its name from
Carrozzeria
Touring's bodywork featured on the DB4 and DB5 of the 1960s, the DBS
Superleggera
is based on the DB11. According to company EVP and Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman: "We wanted to create a car that combined cutting edge aerodynamics with the classic muscularity and presence for which our most potent series production models are renowned." Curiously, the
'Superleggera'
name was dropped after 2021, the car reverting to just plain 'DBS' thereafter.
Aston Martin's flagship Gran Turismo when launched, the DBS
Superleggera
is powered by a 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine developing 715bhp, with 664lb/ft of torque available from 1,800 to 5,000rpm. Mounted low down and as far back in the chassis as practicable for optimum balance, this state-of-the-art V12 drives via a new ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox with lower overall gearing than the DB11 for better acceleration. The transmission also features torque vectoring and a mechanical limited-slip differential. Three driving modes are available: GT, Sport and Sport Plus.
Superleggera
also features Aston Martin's innovative 'Aeroblade' aerodynamic system, first seen on the DB11, which channels air through internal ducts rather than relying on a large and unsightly rear wing. On the
Superleggera
this is complemented by an F1-style double diffuser for even more downforce. Increased use of carbon fibre has reduced the
Superleggera
's weight, while a new four-pipe titanium exhaust system improves the sound. In terms of its performance the DBS
Superleggera
is in the front rank of contemporary supercars, boasting a 0-100kmh (0-62mph) time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 340km/h (211mph).
Unable to provide a DBS
Superleggera
themselves, Aston Martin turned to this car's current owner - one of its most esteemed clients - who was happy to loan his car to production company EON for filming and promotional duties. It would remain on loan for almost two years, as although filming was completed by the end of 2019, No Time to Die
would not be released until September 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic that closed cinemas worldwide. This DBS
Superleggera
comes with a mounted and framed certificate from Aston Martin, thanking him for the loan of the car and listing the scenes in which it featured: on location in Scotland (used as Norway) and at RAF Brize Norton. In the movie the Aston was driven by Nomi (played by Lashana Lynch), who had been given Bond's 007 designation after his retirement, with Daniel Craig in the passenger's seat.
Subsequently used for promotional purposes, including when Billie Eilish debuted the theme song in 2020, the
Superleggera
featured in the Silverstone Grand Prix television coverage in 2021. Presenter Martin Brundle and Aston Martin Formula 1 drivers Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll drove the film's DB5, while Martin's co-presenter Natalie Pinkham drove the Superleggera. The car was also used for promotional purposes by Nokia and Omega but there is no supporting documentary evidence.
The vendor has only driven 50 miles in the Superleggera, the rest of the c.850 recorded miles having been covered while it was on loan to EON. The car comes with full service history, there being two services in the book: 6th October 2020 at 466 miles and 15th December 2012 at 739 miles. Also included are the numberplates used in the film ('KY19 KHO'), while in the engine bay there is plate recording its 'final inspection' by Daniel Craig. Movie stills of the car are available also.
