The Alfa Romeo Spider just seems to get better and better, launched with the standard magical twin-cam block with Weber carburettors and five speed transmission, it proved a heady combination. Engine capacities then swelled and external styling cues changed. The series 3 adopted electronic fuel ignition and a revised interior with this, the final series benefitting from a cleaner redesigned exterior, Bosch fuel injection, full-width rear taillights, on-board diagnostics and an optional automatic gearbox. The joy however, as every Alfa-ista will tell you, is snicking through the gears and hearing that glorious engine exhaust note.
With over 21,000 S4 examples built, finding a good example is not always easy but this is certainly one of them. The conversion from left to righthand drive has, reportedly, been undertaken by Alfa specialists, Bell & Coleville with the acquisition, by the vendors, some two years ago from a Yorkshire-based, private collection. The paintwork is sharp and panel-gap good. Mechanically, it has benefitted from new gearbox synchro’s and is used, now, only in dry weather. Supply with a full one-year MoT test certificate, this excellent example is simply aching to be driven!
