A modern classic by Pininfarina, the simple yet elegant open bodywork premiered on the 1966 Spider 1600 would prove enduringly popular after a rather critical initial reception, lasting well into the 1990s. Popularly known as the 'Duetto', the model achieved worldwide public recognition after starring alongside Dustin Hoffman in the film, The Graduate, but was produced for only two years before being superseded by the 1.8-litre '1750' Spider Veloce in 1967. At the same time, Alfa Romeo took the opportunity to offer a version powered by the 1.3-litre Giulietta engine: the Spider 1300 Junior.

Cheaper than the larger Spider yet only some 11km/h slower, the 1300 Junior came with an 89bhp engine offering superior fuel economy and cost less to tax, thus extending the possibility of Alfa Romeo ownership to a wider market. In 1971 the Spider was restyled, gaining a squared-off 'Kamm' tail, a move that coincided with introduction of the 2.0-litre '2000' model.

This Alfa Romeo Spider was produced on 24.5.1966 and sold new on 28.5.1966 to Assisi in Perugia, Italy. The car was painted white and had a black leatherette interior. The car was born with an engine from the AR 00536 Series which suggests that the original engine is still in the car. In 1987, the first owner sold the Alfa to Mr Ferdinando Petrella in Giulianova, who owned it until 2001 when he died. That same year his widow sold the car to Mr Nino Amato in Frankfurt am Main. At that time it had 37,620 kilometres on the odometer, said by Mr Petrella's widow to be original.

Mr Amato used the Alfa until a restoration seemed necessary, at which point he left the Alfa standing at his parents' house in Torraca, Italy for some 14 years before selling it in 2015 to Mr Marco Fusco in Hofheim am Taunus.

While in Mr Fusco's possession, the car underwent a complete 'last nut and bolt' restoration commencing in 2015, returning to the road in 2018 (see below). It was repainted in black and the interior left original. In May 2018 Mr Fusco sold the Alfa to Mr Matthias Wolf in Achim with 37,620 kilometres showing on the odometer. German registration papers were issued. Mr Wolf used the car very little and sold it back to Mr Fusco with only 39,768 kilometers showing in 2021. Carried out by Fusco Automobile, the restoration involved the following works:

The gearbox was completely overhauled with new bearings and synchroniser rings

The front and rear axles were dismantled, sandblasted, painted and fitted with new rubber bushings and Silentblocs

The shock absorbers were replaced front and rear together with the suspension springs and suspension joints

The steering tie-rod ends were renewed and the front stabiliser replaced

The headlights were renewed and rebuilt with lens covers

The two chrome exterior mirrors, the door handles and locks, as well as the chrome parts of the hood were renewed

The five-speed gearbox was dismantled and new bearings fitted

The master cylinder and timing belt were renewed.

The cylinder head and engine sump were removed, pistons pulled and measured and found to be satisfactory, testifying to the car's lack of use

Valves were machined, reground and adjusted

The engine was fitted with a new gasket set and given an oil service and new spark plugs

The starter motor was disassembled and overhauled, and the carbon brushes replaced

The carburettors were dismantled and cleaned

The fuel pump and the filter were renewed

The ignition coil and plug leads were renewed; the distributor overhauled; and a new contact breaker and condenser installed,

The dynamo was replaced by a technically modern equivalent with integral regulator

All 'V' belts were renewed

The windscreen washer system was converted to electric pump; the windscreen wiper arms and blades were renewed; and the wiper motor overhauled.

The exhaust system was renewed from the middle muffler to the rear, while the exhaust manifold received new gaskets

The differential and the rear axle shafts were dismantled and the axle shafts and the rear wheel bearings replaced

The Panhard rod was restored, and all components de-rusted, blasted and repainted

The car received a new set of body seals during the painting process

The car comes with its current German registration document as well as copies of the old Italian documents and a file of photos from the restauration.
