Italy’s oldest auto manufacturer created yet another enduring classic in the popular and accessible Spider sports convertible. Sold in the U.S. from 1966 through 1994 in four distinct series, the first Spiders, made famous as Dustin Hoffman’s new car in “The Graduate,” featured attractive Boattail styling. The second series featured the Kamm-style tail that lasted through the rest of the series, which was altered again in 1983 with the addition of black ducktail spoiler, more attractively styled bumpers and, in 1986, a revised interior with improved ergonomics.
Equipped with Alfa’s excellent 2.0L/115 HP DOHC engine, a 5-speed manual transmission and 4-wheel disc brakes, the Series 3 cars were available in three trim levels: the base Graduate, the mid-level Veloce and the upscale Quadrifoglio, which incorporated gray leather with red contrast stitching and red carpets. Generally acknowledged as the best combination of availability, usability and affordability, the Series 3 models enjoyed the smoother performance offered by Bosch’s reliable L-Jetronic fuel injection, with the addition of optional air conditioning.
This Series 3 1986 Alfa Romeo Quadrifoglio Spider has been thoroughly mechanically refurbished to deliver miles of open-air motoring pleasure with old-world Italian style. Its 2.0L DOHC 4-cylinder engine has been refreshed with a reworked cylinder head incorporating glass-beaded combustion chambers, new valves and proper new gaskets and seals, a new timing chain, new water pump and new belts. The fuel system has been renewed with a new fuel pump, relays and filters, and the ignition system was given a new battery and new Golden Lodge spark plugs with new correct Taylor spark plug wires. The front end has also been renewed, and the air conditioning was serviced for proper operation.
Handsomely finished in Silver metallic paint with a complementing gray and red interior, it features a new black convertible top covered by a leather top boot and offers an AM/FM Bluetooth audio system, power windows and power outside mirrors. A true Alfa classic, this Quadrifoglio Spider has recently successfully passed California’s stringent emissions test and comes with the original workshop manuals.
