Pour l'exposition internationale de Montréal en 1967, il fut demandé à Alfa Romeo de présenter une voiture représentative du "symbole de la plus grande aspiration que l'homme puisse réaliser en matière d'automobile". La réponse fut un prototype étudié en collaboration avec Bertone, appelé "Montréal" pour la circonstance. Sa version aboutie fut commercialisée en 1970. L'exemplaire que nous présentons fut vendu neuf en France, ainsi que le confirme sa plaque d'importateur. D'une élégante teinte " grigio " avec sellerie en tissus assortie, il fut immatriculé le 21 novembre 1974. En 1983, la voiture est enregistrée dans le Gard, puis, change de mains en janvier 1990.
Deux ans plus tard, un ancien contrôle technique mentionne un kilométrage de 60 738km au compteur. C'est en 2014 que ce coupé hors-norme a rejoint sa collection actuelle, et la même année, son moteur a bénéficié d'une réfection complète chez l'excellent Frank Opderbeck. Depuis, pas plus de 3 000 km ont été parcourus tandis que le compteur affiche 67 220 km. Avec sa tôlerie saine et bien alignée, et sa belle sellerie qui semble d'origine, cette Alfa Romeo a visiblement connu une vie paisible qui a contribuée à son état de préservation exceptionnel.
Véritable prototype rendu utilisable sur route, la Montreal étonne toujours tant par sa ligne exceptionnelle que son tableau de bord original, la belle combinaison de couleurs de cet exemplaire met cet exercice de style particulièrement en valeur. The response was a prototype designed in collaboration with Bertone, given the name " Montreal " for the occasion. The finalised version was marketed in 1970.
The example on offer sold new in France, as the constructor's plaque confirms. Presented in an elegant " grigio " colour with matching cloth upholstery, it was registered on 21 November 1974. In 1983 the car was registered in Gard, changing hands in January 1990. Two years later, an old MOT records a mileage of 60 738km on the odometer. It was in 2014 that this special coupe joined the current collection and the engine was completely rebuilt by the excellent Frank Opderbeck the same year. The car has covered less than 3000 km since then, and the odometer currently stands at 67 220 km.
With sound, well-aligned bodywork and lovely upholstery that appears to be original, this car has clearly led a peaceful life contributing to its exceptionally well-preserved condition. A genuine prototype made usable for the road, the Montreal remains an amazing car for its outstanding styling. A design exercise that is shown off particularly well by our example, with its original dashboard and superb combination of colours.
