Introduced in 1988, and the final design to appear on the 'Type Four' platform following the FIAT Croma, Lancia Thema and SAAB 9000, the 164 in its range-topping V6-powered incarnation at last succeeded in demonstrating the Italians' ability to build a luxury sports saloon ranking alongside the best from BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz. A 12-valve design initially, the 3-litre V6 engine gained four valves per cylinder in the early 1990s, and this superior variant was used to power the 164's ultimate incarnation, the Q4. A specially designed undercarriage was used for the Q4, lowered with adjustable sport suspension and wider track width.
As well as boasting 230bhp on tap, the latter featured a six-speed GETRAG close range manual gearbox allowing a top speed of 245km/h, 'Viscomatic' four-wheel drive (developed with Austrian specialists Steyr-Puch), locking differential and anti-lock brakes as standard. It would also become the only Alfa Romeo 4x4 model to wear Pininfarina coachwork.
Equipped with the desirable sunroof, the stunning example offered here is one of only 1,200 of the rare Q4 version built within the 164's last series of 1993-1994. The 4x4 system was revolutionary and unique for an Alfa Romeo at that time. Delivered new to Belgium, the car was registered for the first time in 1995. The current owner purchased the Alfa when the car was only a couple of years old, straight from Alfa Romeo Belgium; he is the first private owner.
Being passionate about Alfa Romeo and having owned many Alfa Romeos, the engineer owner kept this 164 as it was so exceptional in specification. He bought the car at 12,000 kilometres from new. Today, 25 years later, the odometer total reads 86,000km. This car is unrestored and said to be untouched, which is extremely rare for a 164 these days, and has always been meticulously maintained. After 25 years of ownership, the vendor is now ready to part with his beloved Alfa. Presently off the road and dry-stored for a number of years, the car might require recommissioning prior to extensive use.
Finished in beautiful Proteo Red with Nebraska natural leather interior, this future collector's item comes with its original books (including the service book); important documentation concerning the model; and Belgian registration documents. A rare find indeed.
