In the very earliest part of the 1990s, it became clear that the supercar makers of the world might have something to worry about from Japan. Various manufacturers each introduced their own idea of what a supercar should be, and sports car buyers largely agreed with the philosophy. For roughly $40,000, customers could have a car that not only provided much of the performance expected from a much more expensive exotic, but one with a healthy dose of luxury and reliability. To boot, the cars could be serviced by a massive network of dealerships. While the Acura NSX was part of that assault, its price was loftier than the others by about $20,000.

A true midengine car with an aluminum body, the NSX offered handling like few others and the robustness Honda products have long delivered. Introduced for 1990, it put the sports car world on notice. This 1999 is one of only 238 made that year and is Serial No. 1. No expense was spared on the professional modifications, which take the NSX to another strata of performance. The 3.2L V-6 V-Tech engine is fitted with Science of Speed lightweight aluminum flywheels with four steel puck inserts, a Whipple supercharger and the ECM package. A cold air intake system by Science of Speed is fitted with an AIS filter, and NGK iridium spark plugs and coils ensure precision firing.

The engine breathes through Comptech stainless headers with custom-built CATS. A 6-speed manual transmission employs a six-puck Kevlar and bronze clutch disc and a Comptech short-throw shifter. The already capable chassis is made even more so with drilled and slotted Brembo rotors with braided stainless brake lines, EBC ceramic brake pads and Comptech front and rear sway bars. Fully disassembled in 2018, it was sprayed with correct Formula Red paint and reassembled with a VIS carbon-fiber hood and painted VIS carbon-fiber spoiler, all buffed, ceramic coated and covered with a 3M film. With just 44,830 miles on it, the NSX presents exquisitely well.
