Vehicle number plates in the UAE are more than just ID tags. They tell you what kind of car it is, who owns it, and sometimes how much the owner paid just for the plate number. Each of the seven emirates runs its own system, but the core rules and plate types are largely the same across the country.

Whether you are new to the UAE, buying a car, or just curious why that plate looks different from the rest - this guide covers everything.

Types of UAE Number Plates

The UAE uses color-coded plates to instantly identify what a vehicle is used for. Here is a breakdown:

Note: Colors may vary slightly between emirates. The table above reflects the most common classifications used in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

How Much Does a Number Plate Cost in the UAE?

The price depends on the plate type, the number combination, and where you get it. Standard plates are affordable. Special plates with short or repeating numbers can cost significantly more.

Source: RTA fee structure as of 2026. All prices in AED. Additional VAT (5%) may apply.

To put it in perspective: plate number 7 sold for AED 55 million in 2023. In early 2026, the Most Noble Number auction raised AED 1.136 billion in total, with plate DD 6 alone going for AED 37 million.

How to Register a Vehicle and Get a Number Plate

The registration process is straightforward whether you are buying new or bringing a used car. Here is how it works:

  • Step 1 - Buy your vehicle. Get the purchase invoice. For used cars, check the vehicle history
  • Step 2 - Prepare your documents: Emirates ID, residency visa, purchase invoice, valid insurance certificate, old registration card (used cars), and a technical inspection certificate (used cars only)
  • Step 3 - Visit an RTA centre or approved service provider
  • Step 4 - Choose your plate. Standard plates are available immediately. Special plates require a separate application or auction
  • Step 5 - Pay the fees for registration, inspection if needed, and the plate itself
  • Step 6 - Collect your plate and registration card (Mulkiya)

You can also renew registration online via the RTA website or app. Late renewals carry a penalty of AED 20 per month after the one-month grace period.

Number Plate Format by Emirate

Every emirate has its own plate format, though they all follow a similar logic: letters, numbers, and the emirate name in both Arabic and English.

What Makes a Number Plate Special or Valuable?

In the UAE, a plate value comes down to one thing: simplicity. The fewer the digits, the rarer and more expensive the plate.

  • Single-digit plates are the most exclusive. Plate 1 sold for AED 52.2 million in Abu Dhabi
  • Repeating numbers (111, 7777, 9999) and patterns (1234, 5678) are highly sought after
  • Plates with fewer than 3 digits regularly appear at RTA auctions and attract serious buyers
  • Some buyers treat plates as investments. Values can increase significantly over time

RTA holds regular plate auctions both in-person and online. The 120th auction in 2026 alone generated AED 109 million from plate sales.

Where to Buy or Sell Number Plates

There are three main ways to get a special number plate in the UAE:

  • RTA auctions - held regularly, both online and at event venues. Open to anyone with a valid traffic file in Dubai
  • Online marketplaces - dedicated plate trading platforms where private sellers list their plates
  • RTA service centres - for standard plates or direct special plate applications

When selling, ownership must be transferred through the RTA. The transfer fee is AED 120. The plate must have no outstanding fines before transfer.

Plate Design and Logos

Most UAE plates include the following standard elements:

  • The emirate name in both English and Arabic
  • A logo or national emblem
  • A combination of letters and numbers
  • Sometimes the year of issue or a special design marker

Dubai also offers branded plate options including the classic Dubai logo design and Expo-branded plates. The colored Dubai logo upgrade is permanent, costs extra, but typically carries a 2-5% higher resale value.

Any modification to a plate - painting, tinting, applying films - results in an immediate AED 3,000 fine plus mandatory replacement. Dubai camera network uses AI-based recognition to detect even partial plate obscuring automatically.

FAQs

Can I own a UAE number plate without registering it on a vehicle?

Yes. In the UAE you can purchase a plate number and hold it as an asset without assigning it to a car. Once acquired, the plate is registered under your name via an ownership certificate (AED 100). There are no recurring fees to maintain ownership while the plate is unassigned.

How do I report a lost number plate in Dubai?

File a Lost Item Certificate through the Dubai Police app or website. You will need your Emirates ID, vehicle details, and a description of the circumstances. The fee is AED 70. RTA will reissue the same number since you own it in the system.

How are Dubai number plate prices determined?

Price depends on digit count, uniqueness of the combination, letter code, and market demand. Fewer digits and repeating patterns make a plate rarer and more expensive. Plates sold at RTA auctions typically set the market benchmark.

How can I get a special or distinguished plate in Dubai?

Through RTA auctions (online or in-person), directly at an RTA centre, or via private plate trading platforms. You will need a valid Dubai traffic file and must pay applicable fees plus 5% VAT.

Can I transfer my plate to another person or vehicle?

Yes. Visit an RTA centre with a valid Emirates ID. Pay the transfer fee (AED 120). Make sure there are no outstanding fines on the plate. You can transfer to another person or to a different vehicle in your name.

What happens if I modify my plate?

Any modification is illegal and results in an AED 3,000 fine plus mandatory plate replacement at your expense. AI cameras detect modifications automatically.
