Volvo Could Bring New Electric Sedan and Wagon to the U.S.

Volvo may soon revive two of its most iconic body styles in electric form. According to a recent report, the Swedish automaker is developing a new battery-powered sedan and wagon for Europe, while also considering launching both models in the U.S. market as early as 2028.

If approved for North America, the two EVs are expected to ride on Volvo’s next-generation SPA3 platform, the same architecture that will underpin the upcoming EX60 SUV. The new models are likely to carry familiar 60- or 70-series names, with the sedan potentially becoming the ES60 and the wagon adopting the EV60 badge. A rugged Cross Country version of the wagon is also reportedly under consideration.

Production is expected to take place in Europe, with pricing estimated to start in the low-$50,000 range. Although Volvo sees the models as important additions to its lineup, the company reportedly expects relatively modest demand in the United States, targeting combined annual sales of around 10,000 units.

The timing is especially interesting because Volvo no longer offers a traditional wagon in the U.S. after discontinuing the V60 and V90 following the 2026 model year. Bringing back a long-roof model would mark a significant shift and could appeal to buyers looking for an alternative to the growing number of electric SUVs.

Volvo has not officially confirmed the project and declined to comment on the report. However, CEO Håkan Samuelsson recently suggested that wagons could make a strong comeback, saying the automotive industry may have become too heavily focused on SUVs. If these reports prove accurate, Volvo could reintroduce one of its signature vehicle types much sooner than many expected. Would you choose an electric Volvo wagon over another electric SUV?
