Volkswagen plans to remotely cap charging at 80% for 22,524 ID.4 vehicles as it investigates a battery-fire risk. Documents filed with NHTSA indicate that certain charging conditions above that level could trigger a fire.
The software update is intended as a temporary safeguard, not a permanent repair. VW will also provide warning stickers, while engineers continue searching for the cause. Could owners notice reduced range or performance in the meantime?
A separate ID.4 fire-related recall was issued in January, covering nearly 44,000 vehicles from the 2023–2025 model years. Volkswagen has not yet confirmed whether the recalls are connected.
Dealers have been notified, but owner letters are not scheduled until late November. Why are some vehicles receiving a charging restriction before the underlying battery problem has been fully explained?
