Toyota is recalling around 10,000 2026 Toyota C-HR EVs across North America after discovering a software problem that could cause the battery to become overcharged during regenerative braking.
The issue can occur when the battery is already at a high state of charge. Under those conditions, the software may allow regenerative braking to put too much energy back into the battery. The electric drive system can then shut down, causing a sudden loss of drive power and potentially increasing crash risk at higher speeds.
The recall appears to cover nearly every C-HR EV currently on North American roads. Toyota has sold 6,321 examples in the U.S. through August, while the model is not currently offered in Mexico.
Owners of affected vehicles are expected to receive notification in early November. The fix will require a visit to a Toyota dealership, where technicians will update the software controlling the Battery Electric Vehicle Electronic Control Unit.
Could a software bug like this make you think twice about an EV? Would you still trust the C-HR EV after the update? And should automakers face stricter testing for battery-management software?
