Corvette’s future may include two very different powertrains. Chief engineer Tony Roma has reiterated that a fully electric model remains on GM’s roadmap, although Chevrolet still hasn’t revealed when it might arrive or what form it will take.
For now, the brand is exploring electrification without abandoning its V8 roots. The Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X pairs a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 with an electric motor to deliver a massive 1,250 hp.
But matching that headline figure won’t be enough for an all-electric Corvette. Can Chevrolet preserve the sharp handling, sustained performance and emotional connection enthusiasts expect? And would buyers accept silence where a V8 soundtrack once lived?
Roma hasn’t announced plans to end combustion-powered Corvettes, so an EV could eventually broaden the lineup rather than replace it. The big challenge is creating an electric sports car people genuinely want—not just one wearing a famous badge.
